United Natural Foods Hopefully Will Serve Up a Fresh Turnaround Story in FY27

United Natural Foods (UNFI +3%) wrapped up FY26 on a positive note, delivering a strong Q4 (Jul) report that helped rebuild confidence after the sharp sell-off following its Q3 (Apr) results in June. Adjusted EPS jumped to $0.69 vs. a $(0.11) loss in the year-ago period, significantly exceeding analyst expectations, although sales declined 0.7% yr/yr to $7.64 bln. Sales were pressured by roughly 500 bps from planned accretive optimization actions and another 150 bps headwind from the completed unwind of short-term project work. The bigger positive was the FY27 outlook.

  • Natural products: Underlying sales in UNFI's natural products segment again outperformed the broader market, reflecting solid execution and continued shopper demand for natural, organic, fresh and specialty products. The majority of UNFI customers purchase both natural and conventional products, giving the company exposure to areas of grocery that continue to show relatively resilient consumer demand.
  • Conventional and retail: Underlying sales declined mid-single digits in the conventional products segment, while total Retail sales fell 8%, primarily reflecting planned strategic store actions as UNFI continues optimizing its footprint. Within Retail, Cub Foods same-store sales improved approximately 150 bps from Q3, even after adjusting for the prior-year cyber impact, suggesting the turnaround is beginning to gain traction.
  • Margins: Gross margin improved to 13.7% in Q4 from 13.4% a year ago and 13.6% in Q3, an important positive given the notoriously thin margins in grocery distribution. The yr/yr improvement in gross profit benefited from network optimization actions and customer mix, partially offset by a lower gross margin rate in the Retail segment.
  • FY27 outlook: Management's FY27 adjusted EPS guidance of $3.00-$3.50 was the biggest positive from the quarter and came in well above analyst expectations. The midpoint of its $31.2-$31.8 bln revenue outlook also exceeded expectations, suggesting management sees a meaningful improvement in earnings power as optimization actions begin to cycle, new customer business comes online and operational efficiencies continue to flow through the P&L.

Briefing.com Analyst Insight

UNFI delivered the type of quarter investors were looking for after the significant disappointment in Q3. The Q4 EPS upside was encouraging on its own, but the more important development was the strength of the FY27 outlook, which points to a potentially meaningful improvement in profitability despite relatively modest top-line growth. The company's ability to improve gross margins, distribution-center productivity and service levels should provide incremental earnings leverage as it moves beyond the larger optimization actions that pressured reported sales in FY26. The stock had been slowly trending lower since the June Q3 report, indicating that sentiment and expectations were already fairly cautious heading into the Q4 print. Against that backdrop, the combination of better-than-expected Q4 earnings and an impressive FY27 guide could provide a catalyst for a recovery in shares.
