Zscaler slips as cautious FY27 ARR outlook overshadows strong Q4 results (ZS)
Zscaler (ZS) is sharply lower after a solid fiscal Q4 beat and above-consensus near-term revenue guidance failed to overcome concerns about a marked slowdown in FY27 growth. Q1 revenue guidance of $935-$939 mln exceeded the $927 mln FactSet consensus, but FY27 revenue guidance of $3.908-$3.938 bln implies growth of 16.6-17.5%, while the annual ARR outlook suggests only about 4% implied growth in net new ARR at the midpoint.
  • ARR increased 25% to $3.771 bln and net new ARR rose 24% to $246 mln. Excluding Red Canary’s $141 mln contribution, ARR grew 20% to $3.630 bln and net new ARR increased 17% to $232 mln, while RPO rose 27% to approximately $7.4 bln, with 45% classified as current.
  • ZS expects FY27 ARR of $4.396-$4.426 bln, representing growth of 16.6-17.4%. Only 15% of annual net new ARR is expected in Q1 and 37% in 1H27, reflecting sales-leadership transitions, slower initial product ramps, and continued elevated churn within the standalone Red Canary customer base.
  • Security for AI bookings increased more than 50% sequentially and its pipeline expanded 75% qtr/qtr, while 70% of related deals included Data Security. Non-seat-based offerings generated approximately 30% of new and upsell ACV, with associated ARR more than doubling as ZS expands across workloads, branches, data, and AI agents.
  • Z-Flex generated more than $770 mln in Q4 TCV and over $1.7 bln for FY26, with participating customers producing an average ARR uplift of nearly 30%. ZS ended Q4 with 785 customers generating more than $1 mln in ARR and 4,182 above $100,000, up 18% and 20%, respectively, while net revenue retention held near 115%.
  • Q4 non-GAAP operating margin expanded 220 bps to 24.3%, while FY27 guidance calls for approximately 23.7% and a 23-23.5% free-cash-flow margin. ZS is reallocating resources through a restructuring affecting approximately 3% of employees, while hiring new-logo sales personnel and absorbing elevated infrastructure costs that should keep CapEx, excluding internal-use software, in the low teens as a percentage of revenue.

Briefing.com Analyst Insight

The defining tension is that ZS exited FY26 with accelerating organic net new ARR, record sales productivity, expanding enterprise penetration, and exceptional Z-Flex activity, yet its FY27 framework assumes sharply slower incremental growth. Management’s conservatism reflects sales transitions, Red Canary churn, and the expectation that Endpoint AI Security and Agentic SecOps will not scale meaningfully until 2H27, but the implied net new ARR outlook remains difficult to reconcile with the strength of current demand indicators. The bull case requires AI security, consumption-based products, and dedicated new-logo hiring to produce upside without sacrificing operating leverage or cash generation. The next tests are organic ARR conversion, new-logo execution, Red Canary retention, Z-Flex activation, and measurable second-half contributions from Agentic SecOps and Security for AI.
