Conagra (CAG) is lower after its Q1 (Aug) results this morning. EPS of $0.41 marked its largest beat in several quarters, while sales declined 1.4% to $2.60 bln, roughly in line with expectations. CAG also reaffirmed its FY27 guidance for organic sales declines of 1-3%, adjusted operating margin of 10.0-10.5% and EPS of $1.40-1.50, as it continues to advance CEO John Brase's priorities to restore margins, increase investment, reduce complexity and rebalance capital allocation.
- Organic trends: Organic sales declined 1.1%, reflecting a 2.1% decline in volume partially offset by a 1.0% favorable impact from price/mix. CAG gained dollar share in categories including frozen vegetables, pudding, chili, frozen breakfast, hot dogs and frozen desserts, while total dollar consumption remained broadly stable, down 0.6%.
- Segment performance: Its two largest segments remained pressured, with Grocery & Snacks and Refrigerated & Frozen organic sales declining 2.0% and 1.6%, respectively. Grocery & Snacks volume fell 5.4% as pricing drove continued elasticity, while Refrigerated & Frozen volume was roughly flat, with unfavorable mix weighing on sales. International and Foodservice performed better, with organic sales up 0.9% and 3.3%, respectively, marking Foodservice's fifth straight quarter of organic growth.
- Strategic actions: CAG is also moving forward with the actions outlined last quarter, with inflation-justified pricing set to take effect around mid-Q2 and productivity tracking to exceed 4% for FY27. A&P increased 15% in Q1, while CAG has begun a broad SKU review and is evaluating strategic options for certain non-core businesses.
- Margins: Adjusted gross profit declined 3.9% to $619 mln, with adj. gross margin down 62 bps to 23.8% as inflation, lower sales and unfavorable operating leverage more than offset productivity and tariff refunds. Still, adj. operating margin declined just 33 bps to 11.5%, coming in better than CAG expected, with price/mix contributing 130 bps while productivity helped offset roughly 5% inflation.
- Q2 outlook: CAG expects organic sales to decline approximately 2% as inflation-justified pricing takes effect, along with the corresponding elasticity impacts. Inflation is expected to increase sequentially, primarily due to higher logistics and fuel costs, while increased A&P and the reversal of some SG&A timing benefits are expected to push operating margin back into the high-single digits.

Overall, CAG's Q1 results suggest it is executing more effectively against CEO John Brase's priorities. The operating backdrop remains challenging, with soft volumes, inflation and unfavorable operating leverage continuing to pressure margins, but profitability came in ahead of CAG's expectations, indicating that pricing and productivity are helping offset some of those headwinds as broader portfolio-simplification efforts get underway. Reaffirming FY27 guidance despite higher expected inflation in Q2 also keeps the broader plan intact, with the key challenge now centered on how effectively CAG can balance pricing, volume trends, brand investment and cost pressures while continuing to protect profitability.
