Microsoft Reshuffles AI and Azure Reporting: A Cloudy Picture Gets Clearer

Microsoft (MSFT +3%) is trading higher after announcing a significant overhaul of its reporting structure that will consolidate its three existing segments into two: Agents and Infra, and Devices and Consumer. The change, which takes effect with the new fiscal year and will first appear in Q1 (Sep), is designed to better reflect Microsoft's increasingly AI- and cloud-centric business. Agents and Infra will house Azure, Microsoft 365 cloud, GitHub, server licensing, Dynamics, LinkedIn, and other productivity businesses, while Devices and Consumer will include Search and Advertising, Xbox, Windows OEM, and devices. Microsoft also reaffirmed its company-wide revenue outlook.

  • Agents and Infra: The new segment will become the core of Microsoft's business, with Q1 revenue guidance of $75.15-75.75 bln. The grouping brings Azure, Microsoft 365 cloud, GitHub, productivity, server licensing, Dynamics, and LinkedIn under one umbrella, providing investors with a clearer view of the businesses benefiting from enterprise cloud and AI spending.
  • Azure: Microsoft is cleaning up its most closely watched cloud metric by moving GitHub cloud and other developer cloud services, as well as Security Copilot, out of the Azure reporting line. Importantly, MSFT will now start reporting Azure revenue dollars, not just percentage growth. Q1 Azure revenue growth is expected at +44-45% CC. The revised presentation should provide a cleaner comparison with Amazon's AWS.
  • Devices and Consumer: The new segment will include Search and Advertising, Xbox, Windows OEM, and devices, with Q1 revenue guidance of $14.7-15.2 bln. While these businesses remain important, the much smaller segment highlights just how dominant cloud, software, and AI have become within Microsoft's overall growth story.
  • AI investment: Microsoft reaffirmed Q1 cap-ex of more than $50 bln, underscoring that its aggressive AI infrastructure buildout remains intact.

Briefing.com Analyst Insight

Microsoft's reporting overhaul is a welcome change that should make the company's increasingly AI-driven business easier for investors to understand. The existing three-segment structure had become less useful as Azure, Microsoft 365, GitHub, and other cloud services increasingly overlapped, while the new Agents and Infra segment more clearly captures the businesses benefiting from Microsoft's AI and cloud investments. Most importantly, the cleaner Azure metric should give investors a better read on underlying cloud momentum and provide a more direct comparison with AWS.
