Ciena Q3 Beat, Strong FY27 Framework Supported by AI Demand and Backlog Growth (CIEN)

Ciena (CIEN) is sharply lower today despite another strong beat this morning, continuing a recent pattern in which shares have sold off following better-than-expected results and upside guidance. Q3 adjusted EPS of $2.11 comfortably exceeded expectations and more than tripled yr/yr, while revenue increased 37% to a quarterly record $1.67 bln, reflecting accelerating AI-driven demand for high-speed optical connectivity. Q4 revenue guidance of $1.70-1.80 bln was also above expectations at the midpoint. Looking further ahead, CIEN provided a preliminary FY27 framework calling for at least 30% revenue growth, adjusted gross margin of 45-46%, and adjusted operating margin of 25-27%.

  • Drivers: Cloud provider revenue increased 82% yr/yr and represented 53% of total revenue, reflecting continued heavy investment in AI-related network infrastructure. Combined optical networks revenue, including interconnects, grew more than 45%, with RLS and Waveserver each increasing more than 55% and interconnects more than doubling.
  • Backlog: CIEN exited Q3 with backlog increasing $800 mln sequentially to $8.5 bln, with Q3 book-to-bill significantly above 1.0. Orders have accelerated further, with bookings one month into Q4 already approaching the entirety of Q3, and CIEN expects to exit FY26 with more than $10 bln in backlog. Management added that backlog already covers most of its FY27 revenue outlook.
  • Margins: Adjusted gross margin of 46.4% exceeded the high end of guidance by 90 bps and expanded 450 bps yr/yr, although tariff refunds provided roughly 70 bps of benefit. Adjusted operating margin reached a record 22.5%, exceeding guidance by 250 bps. CIEN is also seeing favorable pricing, with increases ranging from high-single digits to high-teens/low-20s.
  • Capacity: Supply remains the primary constraint on growth, with management indicating FY27 revenue could be higher if additional supply were available and expecting the constrained environment to persist into 2028. CIEN recently finalized long-term agreements securing key components through 2029, including incremental capacity to support growing customer demand.
  • Outlook: CIEN continues to believe the industry remains in the early stages of a multiyear, highly durable network investment cycle. Backlog extends well into FY28 and customer commitments now extend through 2029, providing significant visibility as hyperscalers expand connectivity across existing and new data centers.

Briefing.com Analyst Insight

CIEN delivered another very strong quarter, with accelerating orders and a growing backlog providing substantial visibility into the coming years. The preliminary outlook for at least 30% revenue growth signals another strong growth year and appears supply constrained, with management indicating revenue could be even higher if additional capacity were available. Profitability is also improving meaningfully, with strong operating leverage supporting a 25-27% adjusted operating margin target for FY27. Hyper-Rail provides another growth opportunity beginning in FY27, with management expecting several hundred million dollars of revenue and a more favorable margin profile than existing RLS. Overall, the results reinforce a durable AI-driven optical investment cycle extending into FY27 and beyond. Today's weakness appears more reflective of elevated expectations and valuation following CIEN's strong run; however, today's report does not suggest any deterioration in fundamentals or underlying demand.
