Carnival Cruises Higher as Record Bookings Reinforce Demand Strength (CCL)

Carnival (CCL) is cruising higher today after its Q3 (Aug) results this morning. The company beat EPS expectations, while revenue increased 3.5% to a record $8.4 bln, roughly in line with expectations. Importantly, adjusted EPS of $1.43 was flat yr/yr despite higher fuel costs, as resilient demand and strong operating execution helped offset the headwind.

  • Demand: Booking trends strengthened throughout the quarter, with volumes well ahead of last year and outpacing capacity growth. Half of 2027 is already booked, with both occupancy and pricing at record levels, while 2028 is also tracking at higher occupancy and prices yr/yr. Customer deposits reached a Q3 record of $7.6 bln, up roughly 7%.
  • Pricing/yields: Net yields increased 2.4% yr/yr, on top of nearly 5% growth a year ago and 120 bps above June guidance, driven by stronger close-in demand and robust onboard spending. Cost execution also outperformed, with adjusted cruise costs excluding fuel per ALBD up just 1.8%, 100 bps better than guidance, helping adjusted EBITDA reach $3.0 bln versus roughly $2.9 bln guided.
  • Fuel/operations: Higher fuel prices remained a meaningful headwind, but CCL generated more than $150 mln of operational improvement versus its June outlook through better yields, ex-fuel costs and fuel efficiency, fully offsetting roughly $150 mln of additional fuel pressure. Fuel consumption declined nearly 4% yr/yr in Q3.
  • Outlook: Q4 adjusted EPS guidance of $0.20 fell below expectations, though normalized net yields are expected to rise 2.3%, about 75 bps above implied June guidance. Looking to 2027, capacity is expected to increase just 0.5% with booked occupancy and pricing at record levels, although Q1 is still expected to reflect some residual impact from the spring booking disruption.

Briefing.com Analyst Insight

While fuel prices remain a headwind, CCL shares are surging as the report showed demand and execution remain resilient after shares entered the print near 52-wk lows. Booking trends strengthened through Q3, with 2027 already half booked at record occupancy and pricing, customer deposits at a record $7.6 bln, and 2028 also tracking ahead yr/yr. This is especially encouraging after the spring Middle East disruption, with Q1 2027 bookings rebounding meaningfully over the past three months. CCL also beat June guidance on yields and ex-fuel costs, showing stronger demand is translating into better operating performance despite fuel pressure. With 2027 capacity expected to grow just 0.5%, the setup leaves CCL positioned to continue managing for price and returns rather than relying on capacity growth, which should keep the focus on whether current booking strength can translate into another year of yield and earnings growth.
