- Adjusted EPS increased 43.4% yr/yr to $1.42, but gross margin’s 360-bp expansion to 43.5% included a 380-bp benefit from $28.3 mln of IEEPA tariff refunds. Excluding that benefit, gross margin would have declined slightly, indicating that the headline earnings beat overstates core operating improvement.
- OLLI raised FY27 adjusted EPS guidance to $4.57-$4.65 from $4.45-$4.55 and gross-margin guidance to approximately 41.3% from 40.7%. However, it reduced revenue guidance to $2.928-$2.941 bln from $2.980-$3.000 bln and cut comparable-sales guidance to 0-0.5% growth from approximately 2%, confirming a substantially weaker established-store demand outlook.
- OLLI opened 15 stores and closed one because of storm damage, ending Q2 with 686 locations across 36 states, up 11.9% yr/yr. Ollie’s Army membership increased 12.7% to 18.1 mln, but investors will want that expanding customer base to produce stronger basket and comparable-sales trends.
- The 1.8% comp decline, following Q1 growth of 1.7%, was driven by a lower average basket amid unfavorable weather, economic pressure on consumers, and elevated promotions. Closeout availability remains strong as retail-sector pressure creates buying opportunities, giving OLLI room to sharpen pricing and reinforce its value proposition.
Briefing.com Analyst Insight
The defining tension is that OLLI raised its earnings outlook while materially lowering its expectations for underlying sales. Investors are accepting that tradeoff because closeout purchasing, tariff relief, new stores, and repurchases can preserve near-term EPS, but the 380-bp refund contribution means Q2 profitability should not be treated as a fully repeatable run rate. Management plans to reinvest the $28.3 mln refund in pricing, which could improve customer value and basket trends but will also limit how much of the margin benefit carries forward. The reduced 0-0.5% comp forecast indicates that weather alone does not explain the shortfall and that consumer selectivity and promotional competition may persist. The next tests are whether price investment restores comparable sales, new stores maintain healthy productivity, and margins remain durable after the tariff-refund benefit rolls off.
