Generac Powers Up as Amazon Deal Supercharges Data Center Growth

Generac (GNRC +16%) is surging higher today after announcing that it issued a warrant to Amazon (AMZN) to acquire up to 1,693,745 shares at an exercise price of $200.9266 per share. Generac said 307,954 warrant shares vested immediately, with the remaining balance vesting over the term of the warrant in multiple tranches contingent upon aggregate gross payments received by the company for backup power generators for Amazon data centers, up to a total of $8 bln. Generac and Amazon also entered into a long-term supply agreement, with initial deliveries of backup generators expected to total $2.4 bln in 2027 and 2028.

  • Amazon deal: The agreement represents a significant validation of Generac's growing position in the data center power market, while the warrant gives Amazon an equity stake tied to future generator purchases. The initial $2.4 bln of expected deliveries in 2027 and 2028 provides meaningful visibility into future revenue, while the warrant can vest further as Amazon's aggregate generator purchases increase toward $8 bln.
  • C&I growth: Generac is increasingly becoming a commercial and industrial growth story, particularly as demand from data centers accelerates. In Q2, C&I external sales increased approximately 29% yr/yr to $556 mln, while Residential external sales decreased approximately 2% yr/yr to $617 mln, narrowing the gap between the two businesses.
  • Data center momentum: Generac previously said Q2 results reflected continued momentum in C&I driven by strong data center revenue as it ramps production of large megawatt backup generators. The company also secured a global supply agreement with a second hyperscale customer during Q2 and has received approximately $1 bln in additional orders from new and existing customers since its prior update.
  • Backlog and capacity: Generac's backlog for products serving the data center market increased to approximately $1.6 bln as of late July, excluding committed volumes from the second hyperscale customer. The company is investing aggressively in incremental production and packaging capacity for large megawatt generators and plans to add further capacity as its opportunity pipeline develops.
  • Strategic positioning: Amazon's decision to establish an equity relationship with Generac further underscores the importance of reliable backup power as hyperscalers rapidly expand data center capacity. The agreement could also strengthen Generac's credibility with other hyperscale and non-hyperscale customers as it seeks to convert its growing pipeline into additional orders.

Briefing.com Analyst Insight

Generac's agreement with Amazon is a meaningful validation of the company's transition from a predominantly residential generator supplier toward a broader power infrastructure provider with increasing exposure to data centers. The $2.4 bln of expected initial deliveries in 2027 and 2028 is particularly notable given that Generac's data center backlog was already approximately $1.6 bln as of late July and did not include committed volumes from its second hyperscale customer. Amazon's warrant also creates a direct equity relationship between the two companies and links additional warrant vesting to future generator purchases, reinforcing the strategic nature of the agreement. The bigger story is the continued shift in Generac's growth mix. The equity component of the deal may also fuel speculation about a deeper strategic relationship between Amazon and Generac and maybe spur speculation about Amazon perhaps acquiring Generac someday.
