AeroVironment rallying on clean Q1 beat, record backlog and strong bookings (AVAV)
AeroVironment (AVAV) is flying higher in pre-market trading after a clean fiscal Q1 beat, record Q1 sales and sharply higher contract activity demonstrated improving backlog conversion. The company reaffirmed FY27 revenue of $2.125-$2.225 bln, adjusted EBITDA of $305-$325 mln and adjusted EPS of $3.02-$3.34, supported by 86% revenue visibility to the midpoint, although guidance was not raised and approximately 70% of earnings remains weighted to the second half.
  • Q1 bookings reached $683 mln, producing a 1.4x book-to-bill ratio, while funded backlog increased 37% yr/yr to $1.5 bln and total funded and unfunded backlog exceeded $2.8 bln. Reported backlog excludes substantial remaining capacity under the $990 mln Switchblade, $874 mln international UAS/counter-UAS and $500 mln Titan contract vehicles.
  • Autonomous Systems revenue increased 21% to $346 mln, led by 71% growth in Uncrewed Aircraft Systems on P550, JUMP 20-X and Puma demand; Precision Strike and Defensive Systems grew 8% to $197 mln. Conversely, SCDE revenue fell 21% to $134 mln as the SCAR termination and discontinued programs reduced Space and Directed Energy revenue by 28% and Cyber and Mission Solutions by 16%.
  • Adjusted product gross margin improved to 40% from 36%, lifting total adjusted gross margin to 30% from 29%, while service margin declined to 8% from 13% because lower volume reduced fixed-cost absorption. Q1 adjusted EBITDA reached $53 mln, or 11% of revenue, but management expects a sequential Q2 step-down before stronger product mix and volume place roughly two-thirds of FY27 EBITDA in the second half.
  • The post-quarter $465 mln E-HEL award advances LOCUST into full-rate production, while Titan received a $500 mln IDIQ that included an initial $80 mln order. Management said LOCUST could become a franchise generating well over $500 mln annually in roughly a year, but this remains an aspiration dependent on Albuquerque capacity, supplier scaling and long-lead components.
  • Operating cash flow was positive $13 mln, but free cash flow was negative $36 mln as AVAV built inventory and expanded manufacturing capacity. FY27 free cash flow is still expected to be slightly negative as capex reaches 12-14% of revenue, before investment normalizes next year.

Briefing.com Analyst Insight

The report provides stronger evidence that AVAV’s expanding portfolio is converting defense demand into funded orders and revenue, with Autonomous Systems offsetting near-term SCDE weakness. The central question now shifts from demand generation to whether the company can scale LOCUST, Titan and its uncrewed platforms rapidly enough to deliver the back-loaded profit plan. The unchanged outlook appears prudent given that recent awards are already incorporated, Q2 mix may soften and congressional budget timing remains uncertain. Progress will be measured through funded-backlog conversion, improving SCDE utilization and a second-half product mix strong enough to offset higher depreciation, R&D and capacity costs. Delays, supplier bottlenecks or continued service-margin pressure would make the 70% second-half EPS concentration the principal execution risk.
