Ulta Beauty (ULTA) is trading lower despite reporting a beat-and-raise Q2, suggesting investors are more focused on the tempered tone around the back half. EPS of $6.55 was nicely above expectations, while revenue increased 8.9% yr/yr to $3.04 bln, also above. However, the updated outlook was only roughly in line with consensus, with FY27 EPS of $28.70-29.00 and revenue of $13.22-13.28 bln, as management is maintaining a prudent approach to the second half amid tougher comparisons and continued macro uncertainty.
- Comp sales: Comparable sales increased 3.8%, primarily driven by higher average ticket, with transactions roughly flat. ULTA lapped its toughest comparison of the year at +6.7%, bringing the two-year stack to roughly 10.5%. Management said sales picked up as the quarter progressed and saw no notable changes in consumer behavior or trade-down.
- Categories: Fragrance remained the standout with high-teen comp growth, while haircare increased high single digits. Makeup was approximately flat as prestige growth offset softer mass makeup, which largely reflected less newness against stronger launches last year. Skincare and wellness declined modestly as body care weakness offset growth elsewhere in the category.
- Digital: E-commerce remained a notable bright spot, delivering high-teen sales growth and marking ULTA's sixth consecutive quarter of double-digit growth. More than 50% of e-commerce orders were fulfilled through its store network, while the app now accounts for more than 60% of online sales.
- Margins: Gross margin slipped 10 bps yr/yr to 39.1%, primarily reflecting the lower-margin mix from Space NK. However, the core Ulta Beauty business delivered modest gross-margin improvement through lower shrink, supply-chain productivity, and merchandise-margin preservation. Operating margin edged up to 12.5% from 12.4%.
- Second-half expectations: Management expects H2 sales growth of 4-5%, comps of 2-3%, and EPS growth of 9-12%, maintaining some prudence given macro uncertainty and tougher comparisons. Importantly, ULTA expects its two-year comp stack to remain above 8%.
Briefing.com Analyst Insight
ULTA's Q2 was solid, with comps holding up against a difficult comparison and sales improving as the quarter progressed. Consumer commentary was also reassuring, as management saw no notable trade-down and continued to gain share in prestige beauty. The more muted reaction appears tied to the back-half setup, with ULTA maintaining a prudent outlook despite its stronger first-half performance. Still, continued strength in digital, healthy margin execution in the core Ulta Beauty business, and expectations for the second-half two-year comp stack to remain above 8% were encouraging. Transaction growth, promotional intensity, and the expectation for roughly flat gross margin for the year remain areas to watch. Overall, current trends remain healthy, but investors may be questioning how much upside is left in the second half.
