Elastic stretching sharply higher as AI demand and backlog accelerate (ESTC)
Elastic (ESTC) is rallying after a clean Q1 beat, above-consensus Q2 guidance, and a raised FY27 outlook showed that improving sales execution is beginning to translate into faster growth. Investors are also rewarding stronger forward-demand indicators, record large-customer additions, accelerating AI adoption, and an additional $500 mln repurchase authorization, although net expansion has not yet turned higher.
  • Sales-led subscription revenue increased 18% to $399 mln, accelerating from 16% constant-currency growth in Q4. cRPO rose 21% to $1.2 bln and total RPO jumped 27% to $1.9 bln, indicating that customers are making larger, longer-term commitments to ESTC’s platform.
  • ESTC added more than 80 customers spending over $100,000 annually, its largest quarterly increase, bringing the cohort above 1,800 and representing 90% of sales-led subscription revenue. More than 670 of these customers now use ESTC for AI, lifting penetration to 37% from approximately 21% last year, while AI adopters are expanding slightly faster than non-AI customers.
  • Q2 guidance calls for non-GAAP EPS of $0.80-$0.82 and revenue of $486-$487 mln, modestly above the FactSet consensus. ESTC raised FY27 revenue guidance to $1.998-$2.010 bln, sales-led subscription revenue guidance to $1.682-$1.694 bln, and adjusted EPS guidance to $3.29-$3.37, supported by stronger pipeline, healthy consumption, and improving sales productivity.
  • NER slipped to 111% from 112%, showing that stronger bookings and AI adoption have not yet lifted the trailing expansion metric. However, ESTC expects total and sales-led subscription growth to accelerate during 2H, with Q4 producing the year’s fastest growth, while maintaining a 19.4% non-GAAP operating margin and 21.5% adjusted free-cash-flow margin for FY27.
  • ESTC repurchased approximately $40 mln of shares during Q1 and had deployed $380 mln under its original $500 mln program. The additional $500 mln authorization expands future capacity and signals confidence in cash generation, although it does not specify the timing or pace of purchases.

Briefing.com Analyst Insight

The more consequential development is that ESTC paired its quarterly upside with improving forward indicators and a higher annual outlook rather than relying primarily on expense control. Twenty-one percent cRPO growth, 27% RPO growth, record enterprise additions, and stronger AI penetration support management’s expectation for second-half acceleration, while the raised guidance exceeded the Q1 revenue upside because pipeline, consumption, and sales productivity also improved. The remaining tension is that NER declined to 111%, meaning stronger recent activity has not yet flowed through to companywide customer expansion. ESTC must now convert multiyear commitments and AI adoption into sustained consumption without sacrificing its improving margin profile. The next checkpoints are Q2 execution, NER stabilization, continued $100,000-plus customer growth, and progress toward ESTC’s medium-term target of more than 20% sales-led subscription growth.
