Autodesk Slips Despite Q2 Beat as MaintainX Dilution Tempers Stronger Underlying Outlook (ADSK)

Autodesk (ADSK) is trading lower following its Q2 (Jul) results. The design-and-make software provider delivered a solid EPS beat, while revenue increased 16.1% yr/yr to $2.05 bln, also above expectations. ADSK also raised its FY27 revenue and billings outlook, although the earnings benefit was more muted with MaintainX dilution offsetting stronger underlying profitability. FY27 EPS guidance of $12.52-12.60 was roughly in line with expectations even as revenue guidance of $8.295-8.345 bln was above.

  • Drivers: ADSK continued to see healthy underlying momentum, with strength in AECO, particularly construction, as well as emerging markets. Design revenue increased 16% yr/yr to $1.71 bln and Make revenue increased 26% to $244 mln. Construction remains particularly strong, growing north of 20%.
  • Billings/transaction model: Billings increased 10% yr/yr to $1.85 bln, while management raised its underlying organic billings growth outlook to 9-10% from 8-9%, excluding currency and transaction-model effects. The transaction model added roughly 2 pts to Q2 revenue growth but had little impact on billings, and implementation is now largely complete.
  • AI/industry clouds: ADSK said its AI opportunity is supported by the industry data and workflow context it captures across design, make, and operate. Fusion is seeing some of Autodesk's deepest AI usage, with AI already providing a tailwind to growth. Over time, Fusion, Forma, and Flow are expected to support more workflow automation and consumption-based usage.
  • MaintainX: The acquisition gives ADSK a new entry point into the operations portion of the asset lifecycle, with opportunities to expand MaintainX across Autodesk's global customer base, into larger enterprise accounts, new geographies, and further into AEC. However, MaintainX was not profitable when acquired, and ADSK is prioritizing maintaining its strong growth, creating near-term margin dilution. Q2 non-GAAP operating margin expanded 2 pts to 41%, but FY27 guidance remains 39% as better underlying margins are offset by MaintainX.
  • Outlook: MaintainX is expected to contribute roughly $60 mln of revenue and $70 mln of billings during the second half, weighted slightly toward Q4. The Q3 outlook further illustrates the tradeoff, with revenue guidance of $2.125-2.140 bln above expectations but EPS guidance of $3.04-3.09 below, as MaintainX adds growth but offsets stronger underlying profitability.

Briefing.com Analyst Insight

Underlying performance was strong for ADSK in Q2, with healthy demand, expanding margins, and higher organic revenue and billings expectations all pointing to continued momentum in the core business. MaintainX is masking some of that strength near term, as ADSK is prioritizing growth in the acquired business, with dilution from the acquisition offsetting otherwise stronger underlying profitability. Longer term, AI adoption in Fusion and greater workflow automation across Autodesk's industry clouds provide additional growth opportunities, while MaintainX expands ADSK further into operations and strengthens the connection across design, make, and operate. Overall, the weakness appears more reflective of the margin and EPS conversion of the raised outlook, along with elevated expectations after shares strengthened into the report, than any deterioration in Autodesk's underlying business.
