Lowe's (LOW) is trading higher after a mixed Q2 (Jul) report this morning. The home improvement retailer comfortably exceeded EPS expectations, although results included a $0.11 benefit from tariff refunds, while revenue was roughly in line and increased 8.3% yr/yr to $25.96 bln. However, LOW lowered its full-year outlook to the low end of its prior ranges, now expecting adjusted EPS of approximately $12.25, revenue of approximately $92 bln and roughly flat comp sales, compared with prior guidance of $12.25-12.75, $92-94 bln and flat to +2%, respectively. The reduced outlook stands in contrast to peer Home Depot (HD), which reaffirmed its full-year guidance yesterday.
- Comp sales: Comp sales increased 0.2%, slowing from +0.6% in Q1 and coming in below LOW's prior expectation for Q2 comps to track around the midpoint of its flat to +2% full-year range. LOW delivered positive comps in 9 of 13 merchandise divisions, with continued strength in Pro and repair and maintenance projects, although discretionary DIY spending remained under pressure.
- Trends: Monthly comps were -0.4% in May, +1.7% in June and -1.2% in July, although a July 4 calendar shift benefited June by roughly 75 bps and created a similar drag in July. Q2 average ticket increased 2.3%, while transactions declined 2.1%, reflecting softer outdoor and seasonal demand. LOW expects Q3 comps to be roughly flat, with adjusted EPS down approximately 7% yr/yr.
- Bright spots: Pro, Online and Home Services remained areas of strength. Pro delivered another quarter of growth, driven by small and medium-sized customers, while online sales increased 15.7% and Home Services continued to grow, particularly in replacement projects. LOW said core Pro backlogs remain steady, although homeowners are favoring smaller repair and maintenance projects over larger remodeling jobs.
- Margins: Gross margin declined 80 bps yr/yr to 33.0%, reflecting dilution from FBM and ADG, partially offset by favorable credit revenue. An approximately 30-bp benefit from tariff refunds was largely offset by elevated fuel and transportation costs. Adjusted operating margin declined 62 bps to 14.0%, although productivity initiatives and disciplined expense management helped offset softer sales.
Briefing.com Analyst Insight
LOW's Q2 results were mixed and, while they did not suggest a broad deterioration in demand, they continued to highlight softer trends across its DIY business and transactions, prompting management to move its full-year outlook to the low end of its prior ranges. However, the positive stock reaction suggests investors may have been braced for a more meaningful reduction given the challenging consumer backdrop. Pro, Online and Home Services continued to provide important offsets, while disciplined expense management helped LOW deliver EPS above management's expectations even excluding the tariff refund benefit. The results still look somewhat softer than Home Depot's report yesterday, particularly on comps and guidance, highlighting LOW's greater exposure to discretionary DIY spending. Still, steady Pro backlogs and continued strength in repair and maintenance suggest demand has not weakened broadly across the business. With the outlook now reset to reflect softer near-term demand, execution against the second-half outlook and any signs of stabilization in DIY demand could help support sentiment from here.
