- Demand broadened, with 13 of 16 merchandising departments posting positive comps and Pro outperforming DIY, but the 1.7% comp gain was driven by a 2.8% increase in average ticket as transactions declined 1.0%. Big-ticket transactions above $1,000 increased 2.4%, helped by portable power and patio, although management stressed that larger, discretionary projects - particularly those requiring financing - remain under pressure.
- Gross margin increased 25 bps yr/yr to 33.7%, aided by $685 mln of IEEPA tariff refunds, but the benefit was largely offset by higher fuel, energy, and product-input costs and acquisition-related mix. Adjusted operating margin slipped 10 bps to 14.7% as operating expenses rose as a percentage of sales, showing that the earnings beat did not represent broad-based margin expansion.
- Pro posted positive comps across all cohorts, while SRS produced comps above the company average and generated growth across each vertical. Total sales growth of 5.7% substantially exceeded comparable-sales growth, reflecting contributions from GMS, new stores, new SRS branches, and other acquisitions alongside organic share gains.
- Online comparable sales advanced 11%, marking a fifth consecutive quarter of double-digit growth, with both digital traffic and conversion improving. HD also launched nationwide Express Delivery on tens of thousands of products in three hours or less, while more than 65% of in-stock parcel deliveries are now completed the same or next day.
- FY27 guidance remains unchanged, including comparable-sales growth of flat to 2%, total sales growth of 2.5-4.5%, adjusted operating margin of 12.8-13.0%, and adjusted EPS growth of flat to 4%. That implies adjusted EPS of roughly $14.69-$15.28, while management expects tariff refunds to be fully absorbed by unplanned cost pressures over the year.

The quarter provides better evidence that HD can gain share and generate positive comps without help from a housing recovery, but the composition of growth remains important. Higher ticket, acquisitions, digital expansion, and Pro initiatives are carrying more of the load while customer transactions and financing-dependent remodeling activity remain soft. The reaffirmed outlook also looks more understandable given that the tariff refund created a timing benefit rather than a sustainable margin windfall. The next proof points will be whether traffic stabilizes, SRS maintains organic momentum, and HD can preserve margins as input-cost pressure flows through the second half.
