Super Micro Computer Stock Surges on AI Demand; SMCI Delivers a Super-Sized FY27 Outlook

Super Micro (SMCI +15%) is trading sharply higher after reporting Q4 (Jun) results that were largely in line with its guidance from July, while the company's outlook for Q1 (Sep) and FY27 came in well above expectations. SMCI said demand for its AI/IT solutions is stronger than ever as it continues to transform from a US-based server manufacturer into a leading AI/IT data center total-solution provider. The company is increasingly positioning itself as a one-stop shop for customers looking to build data centers and AI factories faster and more efficiently. With Q4 results generally in-line with prior guidance, the primary catalyst for today's move is the impressive guidance.

  • Q4 results: Revenue reached $11.1 bln, up 93% yr/yr and 9% sequentially, essentially in-line with the guidance SMCI provided last month. The company had previously disclosed some delays related to customer readiness, but expects the associated revenue to be recognized in subsequent quarters. Importantly, FY26 ended with record backlog, including more than $60 bln in new orders received during Q4 that SMCI expects to fulfill over the coming quarters.
  • Gross margin: Non-GAAP gross margin was 17.6%, above the high end of prior guidance of 15%-17%. The improvement primarily reflected SMCI's strategic focus on balancing customer and product mix, along with several one-time positive contributions during the quarter. The margin performance is particularly notable given that the 15%-17% guidance issued in July had already represented a significant increase from the company's prior 8.2%-8.4% outlook.
  • Enterprise and channel: Enterprise and channel revenue was $5.6 bln, representing roughly 50% of total revenue. Revenue in this segment increased 172% yr/yr and 98% sequentially, highlighting a significant pickup in demand from enterprise and channel customers upgrading compute, storage, and network infrastructure with more efficient CPU platforms. SMCI's efforts to broaden its enterprise customer base appear to be gaining traction.
  • AI infrastructure demand: Management characterized demand for its AI/IT offerings as stronger than ever and emphasized the company's evolution toward a total-solution model spanning the data center and AI factory. The record backlog and more than $60 bln of new Q4 orders provide substantial visibility into demand over the coming quarters and support SMCI's view that the AI infrastructure buildout remains robust.
  • Q1 and FY27 outlook: The biggest positive surprise was the outlook. Q1 (Sep) revenue and EPS guidance came in well above analyst expectations, while SMCI also provided its first FY27 revenue outlook of $65-72 bln, which was significantly better than expected. The magnitude of the upside guidance suggests the company's growth trajectory is accelerating rather than moderating.

Briefing.com Analyst Insight

SMCI's Q4 results themselves were largely as expected following the company's July guidance, so the major takeaway is the much stronger-than-anticipated outlook. The outlook indicates that customer demand remains exceptionally strong. The sharp acceleration in enterprise and channel revenue is another encouraging development, suggesting SMCI is successfully diversifying its customer base beyond hyperscalers and expanding its role as a broader data center infrastructure provider. More broadly, SMCI's outlook is a positive read-through for the AI infrastructure spending environment and should bode well Dell (DELL), HPE, Marvell (MRVL), Micron (MU), and Astera Labs (ALAB). With Q4 essentially confirming the previously issued guidance, investors appear to be looking through the quarter and placing considerably more weight on the unexpectedly strong Q1 and FY27 outlook.
