CAVA Group (CAVA) is surging today after reporting a better-than-feared Q2 report last night. The fast-casual Mediterranean chain beat EPS expectations, while revenue jumped 31.3% yr/yr to $368.4 mln, also above expectations. CAVA also reaffirmed its FY26 guidance across key metrics and offered encouraging commentary around recent comp trends and consumer strength, helping ease concerns around a July slowdown tied to broader food-safety fears.
- Comps: Same-restaurant sales remained healthy at +9.0%, with traffic again the primary driver at +5.3%. Salmon and continued strength in premium attachments also supported positive mix, while management said salmon helped attract new customers and increased visit frequency among loyalty members who purchased it.
- Recent trends: CAVA acknowledged that concerns around the cyclospora outbreak weighed on sales exiting Q2 and into early July, with same-restaurant sales moderating to roughly flat-to-positive. Encouragingly, performance improved sequentially each week and has since recovered to the mid-single digits.
- Consumer: Demand also remains broad, with CAVA seeing strength across geographies, restaurant formats, and both established and emerging markets. Encouragingly, lower-income cohorts continue to generate the strongest same-restaurant sales results, which management attributed in part to disciplined pricing and improving accessibility.
- New restaurants: CAVA opened 17 net new restaurants in Q2, ending the quarter with 476 locations, up 19.6% yr/yr, while new restaurant productivity remained above 100%. CAVA reaffirmed plans for 75-77 net new openings this year and plans to enter Las Vegas in 2H26 and the Bay Area in 2027.
- Margins: Restaurant-level profit increased 28.1% yr/yr to $93.8 mln, though margin slipped 60 bps to 25.7%. The decline reflected higher salmon input costs, continued wage investments and a greater third-party delivery mix. CAVA maintained FY26 restaurant-level margin guidance of 23.7-24.3%.
- Outlook: CAVA maintained FY26 same-restaurant sales guidance of +4.5-6.5%, but management said the low end would require slightly negative comps from here and that nothing in current trends suggests that outcome, while the upper end requires roughly mid-single-digit growth. Management said the outlook remains prudent given lingering food-safety, macroeconomic and geopolitical uncertainty.
Briefing.com Analyst Insight
CAVA's Q2 results were better than feared, supported by healthy traffic-driven comps, reaffirmed outlook and a rebound in same-restaurant sales following temporary pressure from broader food-safety concerns. The recovery to mid-single-digit comps puts CAVA back around the pace needed to reach the upper end of its FY26 guidance, while current trends suggest CAVA is unlikely to finish at the low end. Continued strength among lower-income consumers is also encouraging and supports CAVA's decision to remain disciplined on pricing. Meanwhile, new restaurant productivity above 100% and strong performance from more mature cohorts, with its 2024 cohort comping double digits, reinforce CAVA's strong execution as it continues to scale into new markets. Overall, the report reinforces that CAVA continues to pair healthy traffic with rapid unit expansion despite a challenging restaurant backdrop.
