- July is the first month of TSM's September quarter, and the 5.6% sequential increase from June represents a healthy start against Q3 guidance that calls for another sizable step up from Q2 revenue of $40.2 bln. At management's assumed NT$32/U.S. dollar exchange rate, July revenue equates to roughly $14.6 bln, or about 32% of the $45.2 bln Q3 guidance midpoint.
- January-July revenue reached NT$2.872 tln, up 37.0% yr/yr, extending TSM's exceptional growth trajectory. Management also expects 2026 U.S.-dollar revenue growth to slightly exceed 40%, raising the importance of maintaining strong monthly sales as comparisons become more difficult.
- AI-related demand remains the central growth engine, while the ramp of leading-edge technologies provides another catalyst. Advanced nodes of 7nm and below accounted for 77% of Q2 wafer revenue, including 30% from 3nm, while 2nm began contributing as its production ramp accelerates.
- TSM continues to generate exceptional profitability, with Q2 gross, operating, and net margins of 67.7%, 60.3%, and 55.6%, respectively. However, Q3 guidance calls for gross margin of 65-67% and operating margin of 56-58%, making margin preservation an increasingly important component of the story.
- TSM's 2026 capex outlook of $60-64 bln underscores both management's confidence in sustained AI and advanced-node demand and the enormous investment required to support it. Such spending raises the importance of maintaining high utilization as new capacity comes online.
Briefing.com Analyst Insight
July's revenue provides an encouraging first checkpoint for a Q3 outlook that already requires another meaningful sequential increase in sales. The 44.7% yr/yr increase reinforces the durability of AI and leading-edge semiconductor demand, but one month of results does not yet indicate that TSM is tracking above its $44.6-45.8 bln quarterly target. More important over the coming months will be whether 2nm, advanced packaging, and AI accelerator demand can sustain rapid growth as comparisons become increasingly difficult. At the same time, TSM must execute a massive capacity expansion while managing the expected moderation in gross and operating margins from Q2's unusually elevated levels. August and September revenue, along with utilization and margin trends, should provide a clearer indication of whether TSM can translate its extraordinary AI-driven demand into another leg of profitable growth.
