AT&T rings up Q2 EPS beat on better margins, faster connectivity growth, and bigger buybacks (T)
AT&T (T) is trading higher after posting Q2 adjusted EPS of $0.65, ahead of the $0.59 FactSet consensus, on revenue of $31.56 bln versus the $31.8 bln estimate while reaffirming FY26 EPS guidance of $2.25-$2.35. Although revenue came in slightly light, investors focused on continued execution as adjusted EBITDA grew 5.2%, adjusted EBITDA margin expanded 110 bps to 39.1%, and free cash flow reached $4.7 bln, exceeding management's prior $4.0-$4.5 bln outlook, reinforcing that T's convergence strategy is driving stronger operating performance even as it continues investing for long-term growth.
  • Advanced Connectivity: Service revenue increased 5.1% yr/yr, accelerating 150 bps from Q1, while segment EBITDA rose 8%, reflecting continued momentum in T's fiber-and-wireless convergence strategy. Consumer and business connectivity trends remained healthy, helping offset ongoing declines in Legacy services.
  • Broadband quality: Advanced Home Internet service revenue climbed more than 27% yr/yr, benefiting from strong organic fiber growth as well as the Lumen fiber acquisition. Management highlighted its best-ever Q2 for fiber net adds, record combined fiber and fixed wireless net adds, and rising household penetration as more customers adopted bundled wireless and broadband services.
  • ARPU trade-off: Fiber ARPU declined 1.3% yr/yr, primarily because of lower-ARPU Lumen subscribers, but management emphasized that maximizing total household lifetime value through converged offerings is a higher priority than optimizing standalone fiber ARPU. The company also pointed to improving customer penetration and retention as evidence the strategy is working.
  • Capital allocation: T returned $4.1 bln to shareholders during Q2, including approximately $2.2 bln of share repurchases, and now expects about $10 bln of buybacks in 2026 versus its prior $8 bln target, effectively accelerating its multiyear capital return plan. Management also reaffirmed at least $18 bln of FY26 free cash flow despite elevated capital investment.
  • Balance sheet watch: Net debt-to-adjusted EBITDA ended Q2 at 2.68x, although management expects leverage to temporarily increase to roughly 3.2x following the EchoStar spectrum acquisition before returning toward its 2.5x target over approximately three years. Investors will also be watching whether accelerating Advanced Connectivity growth continues to outpace Legacy declines while supporting higher interest expense and ongoing deleveraging.

Briefing.com Analyst Insight

This quarter provided further evidence that T's convergence strategy is translating into faster service-revenue growth, expanding margins, and stronger cash generation, validating management's decision to prioritize long-term customer value over near-term ARPU optimization. While the reaffirmed guidance may appear conservative, the combination of above-target free cash flow, accelerating Advanced Connectivity performance, and a faster pace of share repurchases suggests management remains confident in the underlying trajectory of the business. The next key test is whether Advanced Connectivity can continue growing quickly enough to offset Legacy declines while successfully integrating the Lumen assets and absorbing the EchoStar spectrum acquisition. Investors should closely monitor wireless service revenue growth, fiber penetration, free cash flow conversion, and leverage reduction, as those metrics will ultimately determine whether T can sustain its improving earnings profile without relying on additional guidance increases.
