Booking Holdings (BKNG) is surging after Q3 operating results exceeded management’s guidance, with accelerating room-night growth, cost discipline, and repurchases supporting earnings growth. Investors appear to be looking beyond an FTC-related revenue adjustment and a cautious Q4 outlook that reflects softer international demand, currency headwinds, and planned investment.
- Adjusted EPS of $4.66 exceeded the $4.49 FactSet Consensus, while reported revenue of $8.9 bln missed the comparable $9.55 bln FactSet Consensus. Reported revenue included a $900 mln reduction tied to an FTC matter. Excluding that adjustment, revenue grew 9% to $9.8 bln. A separate $100 mln FTC-related loss accrual was also excluded from applicable adjusted earnings measures.
- Room nights increased 7%, accelerating from 5% in Q2, while gross bookings rose 10% to $54.5 bln, or 11% in constant currency, supported by approximately 3% higher constant-currency accommodation rates. Domestic room nights grew high single digits versus mid-single-digit international growth; elevated airfares and reduced capacity constrained long-haul travel.
- Q4 guidance calls for room-night growth of 1-3%, bookings growth of 2-4%, adjusted revenue growth of 0-2%, and approximately flat adjusted EBITDA. Currency subtracts about two percentage points from reported growth, while tougher comparisons, geopolitical disruption, and investment spending also weigh. FY26 guidance remains high-single-digit growth in bookings, adjusted revenue, and adjusted EBITDA, with low-to-mid-teens adjusted EPS growth.
- Adjusted EBITDA grew 9% to $4.6 bln, with margin approximately stable at 47%. AI-supported service efficiencies helped adjusted sales and other expenses reach 2.0% of bookings, but total marketing expense rose to 4.8% from 4.7% due to B2B affiliate growth. AI-assistant users showed roughly double the conversion rate at Priceline and Agoda, though these comparisons do not establish causation.
- Connected Trip transactions grew almost 20%, and merchant bookings reached 75% of total bookings. Total direct room-night mix remained broadly stable in the mid-50% range. Higher-tier Genius members represented a growing high-50% share. Flight mix and booking timing reduced adjusted revenue yield approximately 15 bps.
- Repurchases helped reduce average shares 7.5%, boosting EPS growth above adjusted net-income growth of 8%. Free cash flow declined 22% to $1.1 bln amid seasonal working-capital outflows. Transformation savings remain targeted at $650 mln annually in 2027.
Briefing.com Analyst Insight
BKNG’s Q3 execution supports confidence in its ability to protect profitability as travel growth moderates. However, buybacks amplified EPS growth, while Q4 investment spending limits near-term earnings expansion. Payments, repeat customers, and AI efficiencies offer durable opportunities, but healthy early-2027 bookings remain preliminary, and the FTC matter adds financial risk beyond the demand outlook. Stronger customer retention and payments revenue could offset lower revenue yield from a growing flight mix, helping fund strategic investments while preserving margins.
