Constellation Energy powers higher as Google deal backs 890 MW of new nuclear capacity (CEG)
Constellation Energy (CEG) is powering higher after signing a 20-year power purchase agreement with Google (GOOG/GOOGL) supporting 890 MW of new nuclear capacity through uprates at 11 existing units across six sites in the PJM grid. A separate 15-year agreement covers another 2,700 MW from existing operating assets, strengthening revenue visibility while distinguishing incremental generation from contracted existing supply.
  • GOOG's anchor-customer commitment enables more than $4.3 bln of investment by CEG in nuclear equipment and technology in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. The first uprate is expected by 2028, with the full 890 MW added before the end of 2032, creating a phased investment and revenue ramp rather than an immediate earnings catalyst.
  • Upgrades to turbines, steam generators and digital controls will increase thermal and electrical efficiency, adding reliable, carbon-free supply equivalent to a large reactor without constructing a new one. Existing infrastructure offers a faster development path, although regulatory approvals, equipment availability and installation during plant outages remain execution considerations.
  • The structure responds to PJM’s “Bring Your Own Power” proposal by supporting additional generation while keeping supply available to the regional grid. Demand-response provisions allow noncritical consumption to be curtailed during stressed conditions, addressing concerns about reliability and the costs imposed by expanding data-center demand.
  • An expanded five-year Google Cloud and Gemini Enterprise collaboration aims to accelerate uprate planning, streamline construction, optimize plant output and asset dispatch, and protect critical infrastructure. These tools could improve execution and operating efficiency, but no quantified savings were disclosed.
  • Amazon’s (AMZN) recent 20-year, 690 MW agreement includes a 190 MW Calvert Cliffs uprate scheduled for 2030–2032. It supports more than $3 bln of broader plant investment and helps underpin another 20 years of relicensing, demonstrating how large customers can support both capacity expansion and longer asset lives.

Briefing.com Analyst Insight

GOOG’s commitment validates two complementary sources of value for CEG: generating more electricity from its nuclear fleet and securing predictable revenue from existing assets. The broader significance is a repeatable contracting structure that links technology companies’ power needs to investments benefiting the regional grid, potentially creating additional opportunities across the fleet. However, contract prices, escalation provisions, financing terms and expected earnings contributions were not disclosed, leaving the investment returns difficult to quantify. Long-term commitments reduce revenue uncertainty but also exchange some potential merchant-price upside for predictability. Ultimately, shareholder value will depend on whether CEG can complete the upgrades on schedule, limit disruptions to existing generation and earn attractive returns after construction spending and financing costs.
