- Q3 EPS of $2.12 missed the $3.02 FactSet Consensus, while revenue increased 25% to $127.58 bln, roughly in line with expectations. Equity investment losses, primarily associated with SpaceX (SPCX), reduced EPS by $0.55, but operating income increased 30% to $40.6 bln and operating margin expanded to 31.8% from 30.5%.
- Cloud revenue surged 103% to $30.7 bln, with operating margin reaching 36.2%. However, third-party capacity arrived only at quarter-end, limiting Q3’s cost burden before usage ramps in Q4. Backlog reached $561 bln, mostly traditional GCP contracts, with just over 55% expected to convert within 24 months. Management also described growth excluding TPU system sales as very strong.
- Search revenue increased 12% to $63.3 bln despite the strongest query growth in five years. FX was the largest contributor to sequential growth deceleration, alongside advertising-specific headwinds and lower AI Mode monetization. International AI Mode advertising offers an offset, but tougher comparisons and FX will pressure Q4 growth.
- Operating cash flow declined 13% to $42.3 bln, while $51.4 bln of CapEx pushed free cash flow to negative $9.1 bln. TPU inventory investment and a $5.2 bln EC fine payment added pressure. Unchanged annual CapEx guidance of $195-$205 bln implies approximately $63-$73 bln in Q4 spending. External TPU inventory requires additional working capital rather than traditional infrastructure CapEx.
- GOOG raised $12.4 bln through common-stock issuance and $28.7 bln through senior notes, with no quarterly repurchases. Liquidity remains substantial at $265.1 bln, including $90.4 bln of marketable equities, but long-term debt reached $125.1 bln.
Briefing.com Analyst Insight
GOOG’s operating growth remains strong, but the investment case increasingly depends on converting that growth into cash after infrastructure and inventory requirements. Cloud’s current margin does not yet reflect a full quarter of bridging-capacity costs, while Search must monetize expanding AI usage more effectively. Debt and equity issuance provide funding flexibility but introduce interest expense and dilution. Stronger backlog conversion, disciplined capacity deployment, and improved AI advertising economics will determine whether accelerating investment produces attractive per-share returns.
