Coca-Cola (KO) is roughly flat following its beat-and-raise Q3 report, with comparable EPS of $0.91 beating expectations by $0.03, while revenue increased 7.4% yr/yr to $13.4 bln, ahead of the $12.92 bln consensus. KO also raised its FY26 comparable EPS growth outlook to at least 11%, or approximately $3.33, from its prior 9-10% growth forecast. With shares up roughly 33% YTD and trading near record highs, the muted reaction is perhaps not too surprising, particularly with some shipment headwinds approaching in Q4.
- Organic revenue growth accelerated to 7% from 6% in Q2, while global unit case volume increased 5% for the second consecutive quarter. Growth was led by India, China, Mexico, and Brazil, with strength across the company's sparkling beverage portfolio. Coca-Cola Zero Sugar continued to stand out, with volume rising 16%.
- North America experienced a more noticeable deceleration, with unit case volume flat compared with 3% growth in Q2, while organic revenue growth eased to 3% from 7%. Management cited the timing of the July 4 holiday and temporary challenges with certain finished-goods businesses, although restaurant traffic also remains pressured, with at-home consumption outperforming away-from-home.
- International markets provided much of the strength, particularly Latin America, where volume growth accelerated to 6% from 3% in Q2, supported by improving trends in Mexico and continued momentum in Brazil. India's top 10 brands also delivered double-digit growth, while China remained resilient despite subdued consumer spending.
- Margins also improved, with comparable gross margin expanding approximately 170 bps yr/yr and comparable operating margin increasing roughly 110 bps. However, currency tailwinds and the sale of finished-product operations in Nigeria contributed meaningfully to these gains, with underlying operating margin expanding a more modest 20 bps.
- Looking ahead, Q4 faces six fewer days and some expected destocking, which will weigh on concentrate shipments. Management also expects consumer behavior to remain largely unchanged heading into 2027, with affordability continuing to play an important role across markets and income groups.
Briefing.com Analyst Insight
Coca-Cola's Q3 results provide a generally encouraging read on consumer demand, even as spending patterns remain uneven across markets. Global volume growth has held up well, particularly in emerging markets, while continued pressure on restaurant traffic in North America suggests consumers remain selective with discretionary spending. KO's ability to maintain healthy volume growth while continuing to take price is encouraging, even as unfavorable mix has weighed on reported price/mix growth and management continues to emphasize affordability. With management expecting consumer behavior to remain largely unchanged heading into 2027, balancing pricing with affordability will remain important to sustaining volume growth.
