Procter & Gamble Q1 Beat Highlights Volume-Led Organic Sales Acceleration (PG)

Procter & Gamble (PG) is sharply higher following its Q1 (Sep) results, which topped expectations and showed an encouraging acceleration in organic sales growth. Core EPS of $2.00 was nicely above expectations, while revenue increased 4% yr/yr to $23.28 bln, also above consensus. For FY27, PG maintained core EPS guidance of $6.89-7.11 and organic sales growth of 1-3%, while raising its reported sales growth outlook to 2-4% from 1-3%, reflecting the recent acquisition of Thorne.

  • Perhaps most encouraging was the acceleration in organic sales growth to 4% from just 0.5% in Q4, driven primarily by a 2.4% increase in volume, while favorable mix contributed another 1.1 points and pricing added just 0.4 points. The improvement follows a challenging FY26 and reflects progress from management's targeted adjustments to product innovation, pricing, packaging, and retail execution, which are beginning to drive stronger consumer demand.
  • The improvement was also broad-based, with all 10 product categories and all six regions reporting organic sales growth. North America grew 3%, driven entirely by volume, while Europe increased 4%, Greater China 8%, Latin America 4%, and IMETA 8%. PG is now holding or growing share at more than 70% of its top U.S. customers, compared with less than 10% in H1 FY26.
  • Core gross margin declined 150 bps yr/yr, while core operating margin contracted 80 bps, as higher commodity and freight costs and continued product investments more than offset strong productivity savings. Still, PG generated 250 bps of total productivity savings, reflecting ongoing improvements in supply chain efficiency, restructuring benefits, and more effective marketing investments.
  • Looking ahead, management expects organic sales growth of approximately 3% in H1, followed by modest acceleration in H2, although quarterly results could remain volatile. Meanwhile, PG raised its FY27 commodity cost headwind estimate to $1.4 bln after tax from $1.0 bln, bringing the combined earnings headwind from input costs and other factors to $1.9 bln, or $0.79 per share.

While consumer staples are broadly higher today, PG's outsized move also reflects an encouraging quarterly report. Particularly encouraging was the volume-led acceleration in organic sales growth, providing further evidence that PG's efforts to improve competitiveness through product innovation, pricing adjustments, and better retail execution are beginning to pay off. This is especially evident in North America, where market share trends have improved considerably following a challenging FY26. However, profitability remains a concern, with rising commodity and transportation costs expected to intensify over the next few quarters. Still, PG maintained its FY27 earnings outlook despite raising its cost estimates, reflecting confidence in its productivity initiatives and improving underlying demand. With management anticipating some moderation in organic sales growth in Q2, sustaining the recent volume and market share improvements will be important as PG works toward a more consistent recovery.
