Meta Platforms' revenue beat overshadowed by rising AI costs, margin pressure, negative FCF (META)
Meta Platforms (META) is sliding sharply lower as rising AI infrastructure costs, negative free cash flow, and potential future financing needs overshadow strong advertising growth. Q3 revenue and EPS excluding litigation charges exceeded FactSet Consensus, while Q4 revenue guidance topped FactSet Consensus at the midpoint, underscoring healthy demand even as investment requirements pressure profitability.
  • GAAP EPS was $3.83, or $7.40 excluding the $9.89 bln litigation charge, versus FactSet Consensus of $6.54. Revenue rose 26% yr/yr to $64.60 bln versus $63.34 bln FactSet Consensus. Excluding the charge, operating income increased just 11% to $22.88 bln, implying a 35.4% margin versus 40.1% last year as underlying expenses grew approximately 36%.
  • Ad impressions increased 10% and average price per ad rose 14%, supported by better advertising performance, improved macro conditions, and ad-load optimization.
  • Daily active people increased 3% to 3.64 bln, while Instagram time spent per user grew double digits. META estimated that advertisers adopting its business assistant’s recommendations generated almost 5% more conversions at unchanged cost per conversion.
  • Q3 capex of $34.91 bln exceeded operating cash flow of $32.79 bln, producing negative $2.12 bln free cash flow versus positive $10.63 bln last year. The narrowed $135-$145 bln annual capex outlook implies approximately $49.2-$59.2 bln in Q4 spending. Full-year expenses are projected at $175-$179 bln, including the litigation charge.
  • META held $82.45 bln in cash and marketable securities against $83.7 bln in debt and made no Q3 buybacks. The planned Class C stock dividend effectively creates a two-for-one split without diluting proportional ownership. Subsequent issuance could dilute shareholders, although management announced no specific financing plans.
  • More than 10 mln people have established Muse agents, with approximately 25% using them daily. Management targets more than tenfold compute-efficiency improvement over the next year, but total serving costs should rise with adoption. Monetization includes subscriptions, transaction fees, advertising, and usage-based enterprise services.
  • Q4 revenue guidance is $73-$76 bln. Reality Labs losses should narrow from $18-$19 bln in 2026 to approximately $15 bln in 2027, while quantitative 2027 spending guidance remains pending.

Briefing.com Analyst Insight

META’s challenge is converting demonstrated AI-driven advertising gains into stronger consolidated returns while funding compute-intensive new businesses. Underlying margin compression and negative free cash flow show that investment is already outpacing near-term benefits. Reality Labs savings provide an offset, but Muse must scale monetization alongside efficiency improvements to justify its infrastructure demands. The key tests are cash conversion, incremental AI profitability, and capital allocation as META finalizes its 2027 budget.
