Semtech slips despite higher Q3 outlook as ambitious FY30 targets raise execution stakes (SMTC)
Semtech (SMTC) is trading lower despite raising its Q3 outlook above the FactSet consensus estimates and projecting stronger near-term margins alongside an ambitious FY30 financial framework. The update points to substantial data-center growth and operating leverage, although the longer-term objectives remain targets rather than guidance and depend on successful execution in an increasingly AI-focused business.
  • Adjusted diluted EPS guidance increased to $1.12–$1.16 from $1.02–$1.08, above the $1.06 FactSet consensus, while revenue guidance rose to $415–$420 mln from $405–$415 mln, exceeding the $410.69 mln consensus. The improved profitability outlook makes this more than a sales-driven guidance increase.
  • Adjusted gross-margin guidance increased to 59.0%, plus/minus 40 bps from 58.3% plus/minus 100 bps, while adjusted operating-margin guidance improved to 33.0% plus/minus 10 bps from 31.0% plus/minus 60 bps. Excluding the business held for sale, adjusted gross margin is projected at 64.0%, versus 63.9% previously, indicating a smaller improvement in the remaining portfolio’s gross-margin midpoint.
  • FY30 targets include $3.2 bln in revenue and $2.1 bln in data-center sales, representing 38% consolidated and 75% data-center FY26–FY30 compound annual growth. Data center would account for approximately two-thirds of sales, while LoRa revenue is targeted to compound at 30%. The consolidated growth calculation excludes $166 mln of cellular-module revenue from the FY26 base.
  • The framework targets 70% adjusted gross margin, 48-50% adjusted operating margin, and adjusted diluted EPS of $12.40-$13.00, assuming 104 mln diluted shares and a 20% normalized adjusted tax rate. A 35% free-cash-flow margin implies approximately $1.12 bln in annual cash generation at the targeted revenue level.
  • The pending cellular-module divestiture would sharpen SMTC’s focus, while the five-percentage-point gap between Q3 consolidated and portfolio-adjusted gross-margin guidance illustrates its financial significance. Supplier capacity, product development, customer concentration, and the cyclicality of AI-related demand remain important risks to achieving the framework.

Briefing.com Analyst Insight

SMTC’s clearest near-term achievement is the combination of higher sales expectations and a two-percentage-point increase in its adjusted operating-margin midpoint. That provides a firmer foundation for earnings growth, but the FY30 model requires sustained expansion well beyond one strong quarter. The portfolio shift improves the margin profile, while greater data-center exposure increases dependence on AI infrastructure spending and successful product commercialization. Today’s decline alone does not establish that the update was fully priced in or identify a company-specific disappointment. The central financial test is whether SMTC can translate rapid growth into durable margins and cash flow while funding the innovation and supply-chain requirements needed to support its targets.
