- Global Banking revenue was approximately flat at $6.2 bln as lending and treasury-services growth offset weaker deal fees. Firmwide investment-banking fees declined 11%. Global Markets revenue fell 6% to $5.9 bln and net income declined 25%, with trading revenue down 5% as a 17% FICC decline outweighed 11% equities growth.
- A $1.2 bln regulatory charge reduced EPS by $0.17 following failures to report suspicious transactions, with remediation creating potential additional costs. Excluding the charge, expenses still increased approximately 7% to $18.5 bln and the efficiency ratio deteriorated to 62% from 60%.
- Bloomberg reported unrealized losses on total debt securities exceeded $109 bln, up 28% from June as rising yields depressed bond values. These are paper losses, rather than realized earnings charges. Accounting and capital effects depend on securities classification. Separately, CET1 capital declined $3.2 bln sequentially to $198 bln and its standardized ratio fell to 10.9%, while buybacks totaled $6 bln.
Briefing.com Analyst Insight
BAC’s NII recovery remains intact, but weaker trading and advisory revenue limits its ability to absorb spending growth. The regulatory settlement creates an immediate earnings cost, while compliance remediation could prolong expense pressure. Larger unrealized securities losses highlight rate sensitivity and the opportunity cost of capital tied to lower-yielding assets, without establishing a forced-sale scenario. Sustained improvement requires stronger fee generation, disciplined spending, and capital accumulation sufficient to support lending and shareholder distributions.
