JPMorgan Chase points to further NII growth while trading and Wealth Management deliver (JPM)
JPMorgan Chase (JPM) is trading higher following its Q3 report, with balance-sheet expansion and broad fee growth supporting the favorable reaction. Its preliminary FY27 net interest income outlook points to further earnings growth, although faster expense growth, Wholesale reserve building, and moderating capital-markets activity warrant attention.
  • Reported revenue increased 8.1% yr/yr to $50.17 bln, while managed revenue, including taxable-equivalent adjustments, reached $50.91 bln. Reported EPS was $5.57, or $5.75 excluding $658 mln of pretax securities losses. NII excluding Markets rose 6% to $24.7 bln as deposit, card, and Wholesale loan growth outweighed lower rates. Noninterest revenue excluding Markets increased 7%, or 12% also excluding the securities losses.
  • CIB revenue rose 14%, with Markets revenue increasing 15% to $10.3 bln as Equity Markets surged 49% while Fixed Income declined 4%. Investment-banking fees increased 14% yr/yr but fell 8% sequentially, consistent with management’s acknowledgment of moderating activity. AWM revenue grew 14%, supported by higher market levels and $263 bln of client-asset net inflows.
  • Firmwide average loans increased 10% and deposits rose 8%. CCB revenue advanced 9%, supported by card balances and yields, wealth-management fees, and deposit growth. More than 650,000 net new checking accounts reinforced customer acquisition.
  • The $2.7 bln provision included $2.2 bln of net charge-offs, down $389 mln yr/yr primarily because of Wholesale improvement, while CCB charge-offs were approximately flat. The $539 mln reserve build, concentrated in Wholesale, increased sequentially but declined from $810 mln a year earlier. FY26 card net charge-offs are expected to approximate 3.2%.
  • Approximately $25.5 bln of 4Q26 NII excluding Markets implies $97.2 bln for FY26. The preliminary FY27 central case of approximately $107 bln implies roughly 10% growth, driven by balance-sheet expansion and higher rates.
  • Expenses rose 12%, exceeding managed revenue growth of 8%, and the managed overhead ratio increased to 54% from 52%. Adjusted expenses excluding legal costs are projected at $27.5 bln for Q4, implying $108.6 bln for FY26.

Briefing.com Analyst Insight

JPM’s expanding customer and funding base supports recurring earnings growth alongside strength in trading, advisory, and wealth management. However, the FY27 NII central case remains preliminary and partly rate-dependent, while equity trading’s outsized contribution underscores variability within capital-markets revenue. Deploying capital into client relationships can strengthen future returns, but reduced buybacks place greater emphasis on operating execution. Sustained earnings growth will require balance-sheet expansion and fee generation to outpace spending without materially higher credit losses.
