[BRIEFING.COM] The major averages have settled into relatively stable ranges after extending their gains earlier this morning. The Nasdaq Composite retains the lead, while participation remains positive beyond the largest growth stocks.
The health care sector (+0.7%) is outperforming the other defensive-oriented consumer staples (-0.4%) and utilities (-0.1%) sectors. Another sharp gain in Moderna (MRNA 167.90, +13.86, +8.99%), along with relative strength across biotech stocks, is supporting the group.
Elsewhere in the health care space, Danish drugmaker Novo Nordisk (NVO 39.76, -3.48, -8.06%) is moving sharply lower, although the company is not an S&P 500 component and therefore does not factor into the health care sector's performance. Its Capital Markets Day targeted 2026-2030 revenue growth broadly in line with the global pharmaceutical market, but those objectives did not ease concerns surrounding pricing pressure, semaglutide patent expirations, and whether the pipeline can offset eventual erosion in Ozempic and Wegovy. Favorable Phase III CagriSema results provided a counterpoint but have not resolved questions about the drug's competitive differentiation and longer-term commercial outlook.
