[BRIEFING.COM] The S&P 500 (-0.5%), Nasdaq Composite (-0.8%), and DJIA (-0.2%) are lower just after the open as semiconductor weakness and rising oil prices weigh on equities.
Strength is mixed, though the top-weighted information technology sector (-2.1%) is a considerable laggard as the PHLX Semiconductor Index (-5.1%) falls sharply. A host of semiconductor equipment and related names are among the worst-performing S&P 500 components amid calls for slowing the development of AI from notable figures across the industry.
Weakness is not entirely ubiquitous across technology though, as the iShares GS Software (IGV 104.27, +2.75, +2.71%) is up firmly while Alphabet (GOOG 342.84, +7.39, +2.20%) and Meta Platforms (META 660.44, +12.41, +1.91%) lead the communication services sector (+2.1%) higher.
Elsewhere, the defensive health care (+1.2%) and consumer staples (+1.2%) sectors garner some rotational interest, while the energy sector (+1.0%) rises as crude oil surges $4.20 (+4.2%) to $104.30 per barrel.
