[BRIEFING.COM] The stock market continues to track sideways, holding the bulk of today's gains that have flowed from relatively broad-based participation.
Today's gains have been aided by the sharp reversal in WTI crude futures ($102.96, -0.70, -0.7%) from their earlier highs above $110.00/bbl and have featured the outperformance of small-cap stocks.
The Russell 2000 is up 1.7%, bolstered by strength in the regional banks and some buy-the-dip interest after a sell-off that saw the Russell 2000 suffer a six-week losing streak and a decline of as much as 11.5% from its mid-August high as interest rates and worries about the Fed embarking on a tightening cycle weighed on sentiment.
Including today's gain, the Russell 2000 is down 0.8% this month; however, it is up 11.8% for the year (it had been up 23.7% at its mid-August high).
