[BRIEFING.COM] Stocks have weakened into midday, with the Nasdaq Composite down 1.6%, the Russell 2000 lower by 1.2%, and the S&P 500 off 0.8%, trading below 7,700 and at its lows for the session. The Dow has slipped 0.2% after spending much of the morning in positive territory. Semiconductor and AI-related selling remains the central pressure point, but the retreat has broadened beyond the largest growth stocks as the session has progressed.

The morning’s attempted semiconductor recovery did not last. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index is down 2.2%, leaving it down 9.9% for the week.

Micron (MU 897.12, -34.12, -3.66%), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD 541.57, -20.66, -3.67%), and Sandisk (SNDK 1328.94, -65.88, -4.72%) have reflected renewed pressure in the semiconductor space, while CoreWeave (CRWV 61.86, -7.82, -11.23%) has remained a focal point for concerns about AI and data-center infrastructure spending. Cybersecurity software stocks are also notable laggards today, with CrowdStrike (CRWD 227.57, -17.00, -6.95%) among the more prominent losers without a specific news catalyst to account for its outsized loss.

Apple (AAPL 344.77, +2.77, +0.81%) has been an exception to the selling pressure, supported by enthusiasm surrounding its iPhone Duo, which sold out within minutes after preorders opened, though its strength has not been enough to offset the wider technology retreat. The S&P 500 information technology sector is down 1.8%, as is the S&P 500 communications services sector.

Weakness has also surfaced outside technology. Vaccine shares came under sharp pressure earlier, with Moderna (MRNA 213.70, -22.80, -9.64%) and Novavax (NVAX 11.22, -1.60, -12.51%) seeing profit-taking and valuation concerns following substantial rallies. That reversal in a previously resilient health care area, together with the Russell 2000’s decline, underscores that investors are reducing exposure beyond a narrow group of expensive growth names.

Earlier support from regional banks provided a counterweight but did not prevent the broader deterioration. Truist Financial (TFC 47.12, +0.56, +1.19%) and Regions Fincl (RF 27.36, +0.05, +0.18%) reported better-than-expected earnings, with Regions also showing sequential net interest margin expansion and improved credit metrics. M&T Bank (MTB 213.40, -5.25, -2.40%) also topped earnings expectations and recorded loan growth, although its net interest margin narrowed. Those results offered a mostly constructive operating read even as the major averages lost ground.

Treasury yields are not providing a straightforward explanation for the equity weakness. The 10-yr note yield is up just three basis points to 5.12%, but it is still 12 basis points lower for the week. The continued retreat in growth, high-beta, and small-cap stocks despite that weekly decline suggests valuation concerns and uncertainty about the eventual effect of elevated rates on demand and earnings remain important.

Today’s data kept both inflation and growth considerations in focus. The import-export price index for September showed notable price pressure. Separately, industrial output strengthened across manufacturing, mining, and utilities, while resource use remained below its longer-run norm. That combination points to firmer production without industrial capacity being fully stretched, leaving solid activity and inflation pressure in view at the same time.
