Broad retreat widens index-level losses this week
Dow -238.97 at 48177.38, Nasdaq -78.37 at 22979.07, S&P -35.22 at 6781.28

[BRIEFING.COM] The S&P 500 (-0.5%), Nasdaq Composite (-0.3%), and DJIA (-0.5%) trade lower just before midday as the market faces broad losses.

All eleven S&P 500 sectors hold losses, which have widened as the session has progressed.

The energy sector (-2.5%) retreats the furthest as the price of oil continues to slide, falling $1.65 (-2.9%) to $55.16 per barrel.

The health care sector (-1.4%) also faces an outsized loss as a majority of its components trade lower after a solid day yesterday. Pfizer (PFE 24.92, -1.50, -5.69%) is the worst-performing S&P 500 name today after issuing FY26 EPS and revenue guidance that fell short of analyst expectations.

Though it holds a more modest loss, the information technology sector (-0.3%) reversed a modest gain, which helped send the major averages lower. While tech names continue to struggle, the market is not seeing the rotational strength that has been prevalent in recent sessions, with cyclical and defensive sectors facing pressure today.

Outside of the S&P 500, the smaller-cap Russell 2000 (-0.3%) and S&P Mid Cap 400 (-0.5%) hold losses similar to that of their larger-cap counterparts, highlighting the broad scope of today's retreat.
