A notable increase in sector strength has seen improvements across the major averages in the afternoon trade.
The utilities sector (+1.0%) in particular has mounted a solid advance this afternoon, steadily trading higher after sitting flat at midday.
Only the energy sector (-1.0%) and information technology (-0.9%) sectors remain in negative territory, though losses across tech names largely prevent growth at the index level and keep the Nasdaq Composite (-0.4%) firmly lower.
