[BRIEFING.COM] The S&P 500 trades 0.9%, or about 53 points, higher. The index still has another 50-something points to go before it could close the Santa Claus rally period with a gain.
Still, the broad buying interest is a positive for the market, drawing in additional buying and acting as its own upside catalyst. The Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF (RSP) trades 0.7% higher. Advancers lead decliners by a 2-to-1 margin at the NYSE and at the Nasdaq.
Earlier, Richmond Fed President Thomas Barkin (not an FOMC member) said he expects "more upside than downside in terms of growth."
