[BRIEFING.COM] The stock market is struggling to get places today, but let's not fret about that. It has been racing ahead in January with the S&P Midcap 400 up 5.0%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average up 4.6%, the S&P 500 up 4.0%, the Nasdaq Composite up 3.8%, and the Russell 2000 up 3.7%.

According to Bloomberg, it has been the best start for a new presidential administration since Ronald Reagan took office in 1985. That is bound to make the current president happy to hear, but it certainly makes investors happy to hear coming off a terrific year last year.

Today's "meh" performance marks a bit of a cooling-off period following the fast start to the year. The mega-cap space has a few winners today in Meta Platforms (META 643.80, +7.35, +1.2%), Alphabet (GOOG 201.16, +1.75, +0.9%), and Tesla (TSLA 413.17, +0.79, +0.2%), yet the rest of the cohort is lagging, which is helping to keep a lid on things.

Losses, though, are fairly modest. The Vanguard Mega-Cap Growth ETF (MGK), for instance, is down just 0.1%.
