[BRIEFING.COM] The stock market opened on an upbeat note, building on this week's solid gains. The market-cap weighted S&P 500 sports a 0.3% gain and the equal-weighted S&P 500 trades 0.6% higher.
Mixed action in the mega cap space has limited index performance so far. NVIDIA (NVDA 119.51, +0.37, +0.3%) shares, which are up 16% this week, have traded slightly above and slightly below their prior close.
Still, the overall vibe in the market is decidedly positive. Ten of the 11 S&P 500 sectors trade higher led by materials (+0.9%) and communication services (+0.7%). The health care sector is alone in negative territory, trading 0.1% lower.
The University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment survey rose to 69.0 in the preliminary September reading (Briefing.com consensus 68.1) from 67.9 in August.
