[BRIEFING.COM] The S&P 500 was trending toward 5,400 earlier, hitting 5,403 at its low of the day. The Nasdaq Composite is trading at its prior closing level after moving higher in recent action.
Meanwhile, small and mid cap stocks are lagging their larger peers. The Russell 2000 is trading down 1.9% and the S&P Mid Cap 400 is down 1.9%.
The small cap index has been clipped by lagging regional bank shares and energy stocks. This weakness has also led the SPDR S&P Regional Banking ETF (KRE) to trade down 1.3% and the S&P 500 energy sector to trade down 0.9%.
