[BRIEFING.COM] The stock market opened lower, responding to geopolitical tension related to Russia and Ukraine. The S&P 500 sports a 0.5% decline and the Dow Jones Industrial Average trades about 360 points lower than Monday.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Ukraine's attacks against Russia's border region is a signal of escalation after Ukraine fired US-made missiles into Russia. The 10-yr yield is down three basis points to 4.38% and the 2-yr yield is down two basis points to 4.26% in a safe-haven trade.
Many stocks are falling under broad selling interest. All 11 S&P 500 sectors are lower with the materials (-1.0%), health care (-1.0%), financials (-0.9%), consumer discretionary (-0.7%) showing the largest declines.
Dow component Walmart (WMT 86.93, +2.85, +3.4%) is an outlier, trading higher after reporting earnings.
