[BRIEFING.COM] Small cap stocks are performing better than their larger peers today, leading the Russell 2000 to trade 1.2% higher. The S&P 500, meanwhile, sports a 0.3% gain.
The small cap index has benefitted from strength in its regional bank and energy components.
Strength in the aforementioned areas has also boosted the SPDR S&P Regional Banking ETF (KRE), which trades 2.0% higher today, and the S&P 500 energy sector, which sports a 0.7% gain. Energy is the top performing sector this week by a wide margin, up 6.6% from last Friday as oil prices surged.
WTI crude oil futures, which settled last Friday at $68.15/bbl, surged above $75.00/bbl at their highs today.
