Briefing.com Summary:
*Anticipation ahead of Treasury Secretary Bessent's 13:00 ET press conference about economic pressure campaign against Iran
*Top-tier data and NVIDIA (NVDA) earnings later this week
*Jackson Hole Symposium begins on Thursday
The stock market endured some difficulties last week with rising energy prices and Treasury yields contributing to pressure that knocked the S&P 500 down from record territory. The market is set to face some additional pressure at the open with futures on the S&P 500 trading about 20 points below fair value and Nasdaq futures showing relative weakness.
Investors have not received much in terms of new data or market-moving headlines since Friday, but this week is setting up to be quite busy. Treasury Secretary Bessent is scheduled to speak at 13:00 ET about the economic pressure campaign against Iran, and it is possible that he will offer some commentary about the Treasury's increased buyback plans. On that subject, CNBC reported this morning that the Treasury's general account, which stands at nearly $1 trln, could be used to fund buybacks.
In other news, weekend trade talks between U.S. and Canada failed, resulting in an implementation of a 50% tariff on some Canadian goods, prompting Canada to impose its own counter tariffs on September 8.
The market will not receive any data today, but a few noteworthy reports will be out in the coming days with August Consumer Confidence (Briefing.com consensus 90.6; prior 90.8) expected tomorrow, followed by July Personal Income/Outlays and the second estimate of Q2 GDP (Briefing.com consensus 1.5%; prior 1.5%) on Wednesday. Besides these reports, investors will hear from central bankers that will assemble at Kansas City Fed's Jackson Hole Symposium from Thursday through Saturday. The theme of this year's event is "Financial Innovation: Implications for Payments and Policy" and Fed Chairman Warsh will deliver the keynote address on Friday.
The Q2 earnings reporting window is about the close, but not before tech titan NVIDIA (NVDA) reports its results on Wednesday. Shares of NVIDIA remain about 10% below their record high from mid-May, so the upcoming report could serve as a catalyst for the stock that has been in sideways range since mid-April.
Treasuries have started the week with gains in longer tenors and relative weakness up front. The 10-yr yield is down three basis points at 4.71% while the 2-yr yield is up one basis point at 4.24%.
