Treasury Market Summary

Good Jobs Report Invites Friday Retreat

  • U.S. Treasuries finished the week on a lower note after a strong jobs report for August prompted a reversal from a modestly higher start. Treasuries started the Friday session with slight gains after a quiet night in the futures market gave way to a small rally in the minutes leading up to the cash open. However, the positive start was reversed in immediate reaction to the August Employment Situation report, which showed much stronger-than-expected growth in Nonfarm Payrolls (162,000; Briefing.com consensus 45,000), coupled with an upward revision to the July reading (to +21,000 from -23,000). Average Hourly Earnings increased 0.3% month-over-month (Briefing.com consensus 0.2%) and the July reading was also revised higher (to 0.2% from 0.1%). The report prompted another shift in rate expectations, with the market again seeing a 60% implied likelihood of an increase to the fed funds rate range in just under two weeks. However, even with the positive revisions, the three-month average for payroll growth was just 71,000 and there was an increase in persons unemployed for 27 weeks or more to 27.0% from 25.5%, so the strong report still had some soft spots. Furthermore, the market will receive August PPI (Briefing.com consensus 0.4%; prior 0.0%) and August CPI (Briefing.com consensus 0.4%; prior 0.1%) next week, so there is still potential for more shifts in rate expectations. Treasuries notched session lows in immediate reaction to the jobs report, recovering a good chunk of their losses over the next hour before spending the remainder of the day in a sideways range. The rebound lifted the long bond back into positive territory, but it slipped back into the red ahead of the close while shorter tenors recorded wider losses. Overall, this week's action saw relative weakness in the belly and the 2s10s spread expanded by three basis points to 40 bps. Crude oil narrowed this week's gain to $8.12/bbl while the U.S. Dollar Index rose 0.3% to 99.16, trimming this week's loss to 0.5%.
