Overnight Treasury Market Summary

Forging a Rebound

  • U.S. Treasuries are on track for a modestly higher start after a night that saw some gains in global sovereign debt after yesterday's weakness. Treasury futures climbed through the Asian session, followed by a pullback after the focus shifted to action in Europe. The currency market saw a rally in the Japanese yen after Treasury Secretary Bessent said yesterday that he knows what Japan is planning on doing. This fueled speculation that he is foreshadowing a rate hike from the Bank of Japan, which was already largely expected by the market. Overnight action saw the release of final August Services PMI readings from major economies. The readings showed a deeper-than-expected contraction in France (48.0; expected 48.4) and Germany (49.7; prior 49.8) while most other economies reported continued growth. The U.S. session will also see the release of August S&P Global U.S. Services PMI (prior 56.8) at 9:45 ET, followed by August ISM Non-Manufacturing Index (Briefing.com consensus 54.1%; prior 54.1%) at 10:00 ET. Crude oil has returned to its July high just below $94/bbl while the U.S. Dollar Index is down 0.4% at 99.21.
