Overnight Treasury Market Summary
Waiting on CPI
- U.S. Treasuries caught a bid overnight, driven presumably by some optimism that the July CPI report will not only bring good inflation news but also the kind of news that will keep the Fed from raising interest rates at the September FOMC meeting. With such expectations, the current bias is subject to sudden change should the report disappoint when it is released at 8:30 a.m. ET. That report is the first order of trading business today, with the attention to oil prices taking a bit of a backseat since WTI crude prices, little changed at the moment, are not causing much of a stir. Once the dust settles from the CPI release, the Treasury market will gear up for the release of the $42 billion 10-yr note auction results at 1:00 p.m. ET. For benchmark purposes, the CME FedWatch Tool currently shows a 45.9% probability of a 25-basis point hike at the September FOMC meeting.
