The major averages opened sharply lower before stabilizing and working their way to session highs in the final half-hour of trade. However, they were unable to hold those levels as sellers took control in the final minutes, and prevented the averages from seeing their first winning session in six days. The Dow climbed into positive territory late in the session, but ended down 0.3%. Both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq fared worse, shedding 0.5% and 0.8% respectively.
