The Big Picture : Change on the Margin
The fourth quarter earnings reporting period shifts into high gear this week and S&P 500 operating earnings are expected to be up 32% versus the year-ago period, according to Thomson Reuters. Revenues are expected to be up 6%.
The financial sector will be the primary earnings growth engine. It is expected to report earnings of $34.3 bln for Q4 2010 versus just $2.4 bln for Q4 2009 as the current constituents in the S&P 500 financial sector lap an easy comparison. That translates to an anticipated growth rate of 1329%.
